The new body of work in the exhibition presences. memories of architecture is the result of a conceptual investigation by Chloë Charce during a recent residency at Proyecto ‘ACE in Buenos Aires. The artist proposes formal replicas of portals of the vast cemetery of Chacarita, erected in 1871 following a devastating epidemic of yellow fever. The doubles, elaborated with a reflective material — iridescent — are transposed onto the burials, which are then captured photographically. As a result, the imitations act like negatives because of the effects of reverberation that make the reconstruction of the portals sparkle. Erratic and intriguing at the same time, the ornamental forms affirm their presence through the vaporous and nebulous images, a sort of imprint of time left by oblivion.

Your urban noises that never sleep.
Your rolling ‘r’ and your ‘j’ with tango playing in the background, Fernet and white volutes.
Your coffees flooded with strong emotions on a match day.
Your streets full of hope and ideals for the future of girls the time of a night of revolt.
The silent inertia of your deserted neighborhoods protests against the greedy hand that steals your bread.
The resilience of your people against the backdrop of the ‘New World’. The unlikely meeting of Europe and America. Carnal and magnanimous city, a welcoming land of that exacerbates paradoxes.
Buenos Aires. I stroll in silence between the burials of your necropolis. I try to capture the light that arises on your epitaphs. I observe your architecture and immortalize your portals made of iron beads. These witnesses of the colonial ages, the time of the cathedrals, symbols of passage, transition between inside and outside, opening and closing on the world; subtle breaches between the universe of the living and that of the dead “.

Chloë Charce was born in France and grown up in the Laurentian region (Quebec). She lives and works in Montreal. She has a BFA in visual and media arts from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and is persuing an MFA in studio arts at Concordia University, in sculpture. Her work has been shown in a solo show at the Centre d’exposition de Val-David in 2013. She also participated in several events and group exhibitions, including in 2012 Latitude L at La Maison de la culture Côte-des-Neiges (Montreal); in 2011 Estiv’Art, organized by the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides (Saint-Jerome) and Art souterrain (Montreal). She is a member of l’Atelier Graff (Montreal) where she was invited for a residency for the project Insertion. She has been curator (with co-curator Guy Sioui Durand in 2014) for the Jardins du précambrien’s Symposium international d’art-nature in 2013 and 2014 in Val-David.
